Northview Outlook

Sloping leafy blocks, timber and tin - it's the essence of Brisbane's inner city character. This 1920's Queensland cottage was in dire need of a restoration and upgrade.

Clients Steve and Jen saw potential where others saw an ugly duckling. The most striking aspect of this house is the natural ampitheatre created at the rear of the property  by the back of the house, the slope and a large stand of very mature trees just beyond the back fence. The canopy creates an enclosure that is very private and allows the occupants to experience a sense of volume much larger than the usual ground plane.

The design of the extension focusses on connecting both levels of the house to the volume of space at the back. A double height entertaining deck is the key planning idea. The living, family, dining, kitchen, upstairs library and master bedroom all bleed out on to this space. The deck itself then has occupiable edges that allow for the amphitheatre experience to be further enhanced.

The design for the exisitng upper level of the house maintains the original form where possible. The exterior frontage has been restored including opening up the original entry veranda. Extensions to the rear and underneath are  modern but sympathetic to the original lines and materials of the house.
